Ewha Hosts Walkathon to Commemorate 140th Anniversary
Ewha Hosts Walkathon to Commemorate 140th Anniversary A commemorative walkathon called “Ewha, Walking Together” was held on April 28 to celebrate the 140th anniversary of Ewha Womans University. Organized by the Volunteer Services Team under the Office of Student Affairs, the event was designed to honor Ewha’s rich 140-year history and to share its vision of “leading the era of great transformation through inclusive innovation,” bringing together approximately 1,400 participants, including students, faculty, staff, alumnae, members of affiliated institutions, and local residents. The occasion carried particular significance as the university’s first major walkathon open to the local community. The event commenced at ECC Valley, where Vice President for Student Affairs Jeong Ah Choi remarked, “I hope this serves as an opportunity to reflect on Ewha’s proud history and stride forward together into a new future,” and Ewha President Hyang-Sook Lee underscored the significance of the gathering with the following remark: “Today is a momentous day to once again share with the world Ewha’s core values of sharing, service, and togetherness, cultivated over the past 140 years.” Following a celebratory performance by the cheering squad PYRUS, participants set off on their procession to the music of the Ewha Brass Ensemble, walking together along the roughly 1.4-kilometer course starting at ECC Valley, passing the main gate, and continuing Daehyun Cultural Park, Welch-Ryang Auditorium, and Pfeiffer Hall before looping back. During the march, a traditional gilnori street parade by pungmul folk percussion troupes heightened the festive atmosphere. The festivities drew to close with vibrant performances by the Ewha Male Faculty Choir and the dance crew VIVACITY, while the Ewha Alumnae Association and various companies and institutional partners enriched the occasion through their generous sponsorship of souvenirs and refreshments.
Ewha Researchers Selected for Major Merit Research Program
Ewha Researchers Selected for Major Merit Research Program Researchers at Ewha Womans University have been awarded funding for a large-scale Merit Research Program under the National Research Foundation of Korea’s Basic Research Program, underscoring the university’s world-class research capabilities in basic science. Professor Seungwoo Hong, Professor Chirlmin Joo A research team led by Professor Hong Seungwoo of the Department of Chemistry & Nanoscience was selected for the 2026 Hanwoomul-Phagi Basic Research program and will receive approximately KRW 1.97 billion in research funding over the next 10 years. The team plans to develop biomimetic anticancer agents capable of precisely regulating reactive oxygen species and establish a multidimensional screening-based preclinical validation platform aimed at advancing next-generation personalized cancer therapies. In particular, treatment strategies that selectively target cancer cells are expected to increase the potential for clinical application. A team led by Distinguished Professor Chirlmin Joo of the Departments of Physics and Life Science has also been selected for the Merit Research Program (type 2) and will carry out a three-year research project supported by KRW 1.05 billion in funding. The research team will develop next-generation single-molecule analysis techniques capable of simultaneously analyzing individual proteins to determine their size, charge, structure, dynamics, and other characteristics. These techniques are expected to enable the precise detection of disease-related biomarkers, contributing to early diagnosis and advancing precision medicine. These awards are seen as demonstrating that Ewha’s basic research capabilities are expanding beyond short-term projects into long-term, large-scale research.

Ewha Architecture Forum Features World-Renowned Architect Dominique Perrault
Ewha Architecture Forum Features World-Renowned Architect Dominique Perrault To commemorate the 140th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Korea and France, the 2026 Korea Herald Architecture Talk featuring renowned architect Dominique Perrault was held on April 7 at Lee Sam-bong Hall at the Ewha Campus Complex (ECC). Organized by The Korea Herald and sponsored by Ewha Womans University, the forum held special significance as the ECC is one of Perrault’s signature architectural works. Approximately 400 people attended the event, including architects and cultural figures from Korea and abroad, as well as students and members of the public. Distinguished attendees included Eun Mee Kim, Chairperson of the Board of Trustees of Ewha Womans University; Ewha President Hyang-Sook Lee; and French Ambassador Philippe Bertoux. President Lee said in her welcoming remarks, “This forum carries profound meaning, providing a platform for international dialogue through architecture in a year that marks both the 140th anniversary of Korea and France establishing diplomatic ties and the 140th anniversary of Ewha’s founding.” Next, Perrault took the stage to deliver a keynote lecture titled “Public Architecture: Ground, Light and the Civic Realm.” Drawing on projects such as the ECC and the Gangnam Intermodal Transit Center (GITC), he emphasized the need to reimagine the “ground” not as a mere boundary but as a functional and experiential space. Furthermore, he underscored that future urban development should focus on compact growth and green space conservation, rather than unchecked sprawl. After his lecture, Perrault joined a discussion with Sang-Hun Lee, emeritus professor of architecture at Konkuk University, on “Shaping Cities and Public Space in Korea and France.” The two discussed the role of public space and the direction of urban design, with Perrault noting that public space emerges through time, use, and memory. The forum ended on a high note, having established itself as a venue for international discourse on public architecture and the future of cities.
Ewha Holds Dedication Ceremony for New Main Gate
Ewha Womans University held a dedication ceremony for its main gate on March 31 to mark its 140th anniversary, unveiling a newly built entrance that reflects the university’s storied history and status. The new main gate, which was completed after one month of construction beginning in February, is designed both to symbolize Ewha’s identity as it marks its 140th anniversary and to enhance student safety. Consisting of stone pillars and white gates, the gate’s lattice design incorporates Gothic motifs from the façade of the Welch-Ryang Auditorium, ensuring architectural cohesion across campus. The color of the pear blossom relief on the wall keeps the gate in harmony with the surrounding landscape. In addition, a folding gate system was introduced, allowing the white gates to retract into the pillars during normal operation for unobstructed passage and to extend when access is restricted, enhancing operational efficiency and ease of maintenance. Ewha’s main granite gate, which was built in 1958 as part of the post-Korean War campus reconstruction, is a historical site that has served both as a focal point of the democratization movement and a symbolic space for student interaction. It was relocated in 2002 following the demolition of Ewha Bridge and later reinstalled set back within an open forecourt, where it remains in use. The dedication ceremony at the main gate was attended by around 20 participants, including Eun Mee Kim, Chairperson of the Board of Trustees of Ewha Womans University; Ewha President Hyang-Sook Lee; and key university administrators, as well as representatives of the faculty and staff, students, and alumnae. President Hyang-Sook Lee remarked, “The newly renovated main gate embodies Ewha’s identity, rooted in 140 years of history and tradition, and also symbolizes a new beginning as we move toward the future. I hope the gate will serve as a meaningful place that rekindles cherished memories and pride among members of the Ewha community and shares Ewha’s values and spirit with all who visit.”
Ewha Holds Unveiling Ceremony for Accessible Student Lounge
Ewha Holds Unveiling Ceremony for Accessible Student Lounge The Office of Student Affairs at Ewha Womans University held an unveiling ceremony for the Accessible Student Lounge on March 17 at the Student Union Building, opening a new support space designed for students with disabilities. The project was launched in response to the growing number of students with disabilities and the increasing demand for support services as part of Ewha’s efforts to create a barrier-free campus environment. Located in the Student Union Building, the new lounge is a dedicated space for recreation and study that is accessible 24 hours a day. The facility is equipped with accessibility features tailored to a range of different disabilities, including automatic doors, height-adjustable electric tables, easy-to-move chairs, recliners, and daybeds. The university has also created a dedicated counseling room and installed braille signage and emergency call buttons to enhance accessibility and safety. Jeong Ah Choi, Vice President for Student Affairs, explained that “an advisory panel of five students with disabilities was involved in the improvement process to reflect student input and actual user experience.” Ewha President Hyang-Sook Lee said, “Creating an environment where all students can learn and grow without discrimination is an important step in Ewha’s pursuit of inclusive innovation,” adding that the university would continue to expand support services. Meanwhile, barrier-free certificate issuing machines equipped with text-to-speech, braille keyboards, and adjustable height were also installed at the Ewha Campus Complex and the Student Union Building. The Support Center for Students with Disabilities plans to gradually establish Accessible Lounges in every college building based on student feedback.
