The opening of 2022 Spring

2022 spring semester of the Language Center began. Both domestic and overseas classes opened on March 10th(Thr), while the preparation class for TOPIK, a special Korean language course, opened on March 14th(Mon). In addition, the short-term course began on March 4th(Fri). At the opening ceremony, we first welcomed, and guided on the spring semester schedule, school facilities, and information for a safe life in Korea. The opening ceremony was held online in each class. In the domestic intensive course, students from 34 countries around the world are taking Korean language training. The spring semester ends on May 19th.

The 24th invited scholarship students from the Koreans Foundation experience Korean culture activities

The 24th Invited scholarship students from the Overseas Koreans Foundation, who are taking Korean Intensive Program in Ewha Language Center, participated in Korean culture experience activities. Scholarship students had time to learn about Pansori, which was registered as a World Intangible Cultural Heritage, and learn a part of Pansori. In particular, they appreciated the five existing pansori yards and sang the most famous Chunhyangga's Sarangga along the beat. Although it was conducted online due to COVID-19, it was a special time for all scholarship students staying at Korea and abroad to experience Korean traditional art culture. This course is a program that conducts Korean language training for 19 overseas Korean students selected from the Overseas Korean Foundation for two semesters from September 2021 to February 2022.

Winter Intensive Program Scholarship certificate award ceremony

2021 winter intensive scholarship certificate ceremony was conducted online through ZOOM on January 6th, 2022 (Thurs). Seven students were selected as scholarship students, who were excellent in grades in each class. Director Shin Sang-geun, Vice President Park Mi-hee, and teachers of the Korean Language Education Department attended the ceremony in a non-face-to-face manner to congratulate scholarship students on winning the award. In particular, the presentation of scholarship students’ feelings and pre-produced congratulatory videos by their homeroom teachers made it a more heartwarming and touching award ceremony.

2021 Completion Ceremony of Korean Intensive Course for Fall Semester

The completion ceremony of the 2021 Fall semester intensive course was held at 12:00 on Thursday, November 25. In the summer semester, online(non-face-to-face) lectures were held in accordance with the guidelines of the Ministry of Education and our school, so the completion ceremony was held online. At the ceremony, students from grades 1 to 6 watched videos of their activities in the semester and they was presented with honors awards and certificates. Graduates of grade 6 were presented with diplomas and graduation gifts. Afterwards, students announced their impressions and future plans and they congratulated classmates and thanked the teachers. The completion ceremony ended by expressing expectations for offline(face-to-face) classes and exchanging greetings with classmates at school. The Ewha Language Center’s intensive program in winter semester is scheduled to be held offline.

2021 Fall Intensive Course After School Cultural Activities: Creating Dongji(Winter) Folk drawing Calendar

On Thursday, November 4th and Friday November 5th, from 2pm to 4 pm, more than 40 students participated in the cultural experience program held by National Folk Museum of Korea to create the Dongji(Winer) folk drawing calendar. Dongji(冬至), December 22nd on solar calendar, is known for the shortest day time and the longest night time of the year. Since Yanggi(陽氣) arises from this day, Koreans consider Dongji as the beginning of a year, and call it “Little Seollal”, Korean’s little new year's day. Students learned about Dongji, as one of the Korean seasons, and since Dongji had the custom of creating and giving away handmade folk drawing calendars, students drew tigers and magpies and made their own 2022 folk drawing calendar. After participating in lectures on Dongji customs and experiencing traditional Korean culture through crafting activities, students had a meaningful time feeling and experiencing traditional Korean culture. This cultural activity was conducted online using a videoconferencing program.

2021 Fall Intensive Program Culture Class

On Friday October 29th, the Ewha Language Center students participated in a Hanji Crafts program via zoom. (Hanji is a traditional Korean paper handmade from mulberry trees.). The students of intensive Program took part in the 100 minute Hangi Crafts program that began at 11:10 am. The students learned how hanji is made and its characteristics. Then, they made their own cell phone cradle using hanji. Through the culture class, the students were able to learn about hangi, the traditional Korean paper handmade from mulberry trees, and experience the Korean culture.

2021 Fall Intensive Program After School Culture Activity : Making Chuseok Lanterns

On September 29th (Wed) and 30th (Fri) from 2pm to 4pm, 40 Ewha Language Center students participated in the Chuseok Latern making program, one of the programs in which foreigners can spend the holidays, held by the National Folk Museum of Korea. The students learned more about the Chuseok holidays and made an illumninating mid-autumn moon lantern. They also enjoyed the beauty of the Korean tradition by making the moon, rabbit, persimmon and jangdokdae (platform for crocks of sauces and condiments) flowers with hanji (traditional Korean paper handmade from mulberry trees). At the end, the students shared good wishes like having a bright future as the mid-autumn moon with each other. The culture experience program was held online.

2021 Hangeul Day Korean Hanmadang Event Fall Semester Intensive Course

To commemorate the 575th Hangeul Day, Ewha Language Center hosted a “Korean Hanmadang” event on October 8th. The event was consisted of Korean speaking and writing sections which all students from Levels 1-6 who were receiving Korean language training at ELC participated. ‘My life in Korea’, ‘Things I like’, ‘My favorite Korean words’, etc. were the writing subjects for beginners and ‘My Favorite ○○○’, ‘Letter to King Sejong’, ‘Wise Korean Life’ for intermediate and advanced level. A small scholarship will be awarded to the best in each class. In commemoration of Hangeul Day, we had a fun and meaningful time to think about the meaning of Hangeul Day and to show off the Korean skills we have learned in class. This Hangeul Day event was held online using a video conference program.

2021 Summer Korean Special Activity Event

Ewha Language Center conducted Korean special activity event for summer Intensive students. The event was held as a team competition(in the beginner's class) and a class competition(in the intermediate and advanced class) between two teams. The students showed their Korean skills by answering quizzes about Korean vocabulary, expressions, Korean culture, and common sense. Also, they had an enjoyable time playing various Korean-related group games such as 3-6-9 games, speaking in a row, guessing the names of K-drama or K-pop singers, reading words with initial consonants, and Golden Bell Quiz.

2021 Summer After School Culture Activities of Intensive Program: Stenciling a Seoul Map Tote Bag

About 40 students from the intensive program of Ewha Language Center participated in the cultural activity of "Stenciling a Seoul Map Tote Bag " which was held at the Seoul Museum of History on July 6(Tue) and July 13(Tue). Students had a lecture about famous tourist attractions in Seoul, Seoul in the movie, and the historical and geographical features of Seoul using ZOOM program. Then students had experienced making echo bags by drawing major buildings in Seoul on them with old maps of Seoul. Students had a great opportunity to compare the past and present of Seoul and to understand the history and characteristics of Seoul, the capital of Korea.
