2021 Summer After School Culture Activities of Intensive Program: Designing a Kyunghee Palace Dancheong Pattern Mirror

Ewha Language Center’s Students toured Kyunghee Palace and designed Dancheong pattern for two days on July 5(Mon) and July 12(Mon) using ZOOM program. About 40 students applied for this activity in advance could join from 2pm to 4pm. After having lecture of live commentary on the history and characteristics of Kyunghee Palace, students decorated a mirror with five colors of Dancheong. Even though it was conducted in non-face-to-face, students had a meaningful time to learn the meaning of five-colored Dancheong while looking around Kyunghee Palace online.

2021 Summer After School Culture Activities of Intensive Program: Making a Korean Traditional Fan

About 40 students from the Ewha Language Center participated in the cultural activity named of ‘Making a Korean Traditional Fan’ which was held at the National Folk Museum of Korea from 2 PM to 4 PM on June 29 (Tue) and 30 (Wed). The students listened to the explanation of ‘The meaning and symbolism of paintings in folk tales’. Afterwards, the students joined the ‘Making a Folk Painting Fan’ activity by painting the folk paintings drawn on the Dano fan. This activity led students to understand folk paintings, the most popular and traditional Korean painting. This cultural experience activity was conducted online using a video conference program.

2021 Summer Cultural Activity of Intensive Program

Korean Intensive Students’s of Ewha Language Center participated online for creating a seal on July 8, Friday. First, the lecture of history and meaning of a seal was conducted so that students could carve their name in Korean on a seal under the instructor’s guideline. Also, they set a seal on a bookmark which was written as “Name that will make the World shine”. It was a meaningful time for students to think about their valuable name by carving each letter in Korean.

2021 Summer Ceremony of the Certificate of Scholarship for Intensive Program

The ceremony of scholarship certificates for the 2021 summer was held non face-to-face through ZOOM on Wednesday, June 30th at 1:30 p.m. Selected scholarship students are FEKIH INES(Tunisia), BAZZONI NICOLAS(Italy), HSU LI FANG(Taiwan), HONDA SAKI(Japan), TAKIHANA HINAKO(Japan), IIZUKA SAHO(Japan), ZHAO YUANYUAN(China), and YAMAMOTO MIKU(Japan) a total of 8 people with outstanding grades. Shin Sang-Keun, director of the Ewha Language Center and Korean language education instructors attended the ceremony online to celebrate the scholarship students' awards. The ceremony, in particular, became more heartwarming and touching with the scholarship holder’s announcements and pre-recorded congratulatory videos of their homeroom teachers.

Hosting the Workshop for the Ministry of Korean Education

The workshop for the ministry of Korean Education of 2021 Spring semester was held on May 13th(Thu)at 3:00 PM. This workshop was consisted of existing opinions on the pronunciation education after taking the lecture titled ‘The reality of Korean pronunciation– Education focusing on the field training’ by Prof. Kim, who is known for the assistant professor at Korean Language Education Center of Seoul National University. The lecture, in particular, was about how to guide pronunciation effectively in class and to correct the pronunciation error. Since those contents were all necessary in real Korean education field, it was a good time for Korean instructors to think about the best teaching method on pronunciation.

May Parents' Day, Teacher's Day, Let's be together!

Ewha Language Center held a "Thank You Letter Writing Event" for foreign students in the intensive program to express their gratitude for the "Family Month" in May. Students showed their Korean ability to write letters in Korean for their parents, teachers, and other grateful people. Students spoke their minds directly by using their native language in thank you letters, taking pictures and sending them to their parents and teachers. In particular, this event added the meaning by drawing or making carnations which mean appreciation and respect. Students had a meaningful time to learn the meaning of Parents' Day and Teacher's Day in May and write thank you letters to their parents and teachers. The event was held online.

Ceremony of the Certificate of Scholarship for Intensive Program(2020 Winter Semester)

2020 Winter awarding ceremony for Korean intensive program scholarship students took place non-face-to-face with ZOOM on December 29th(Tue) at 1:20 pm. The students selected as scholarship students were TSANG LONG IN, HO JI JUN REUBEN, SUN PEI HAN, MOK KWAN YEE GRACE, SATO FUMIE, ZHONG LI, ASAHARA IZUMI, ITO MIU. There were selected for their outstanding in each class. Director Shin Sang-keun and other Korean language education teachers attended online and congratulated scholarship students on their awards. In particular, it became meaningful moment with the celebration video of the homeroom teachers as along with the presentation of the scholarship students.

Opening of Intensive Program for Winter semester

Intensive Program for Winter semester of 2020 opened on December 11(Fri). The winter semester started online due to the situation of COVID-19 and will continue with online classes until current situation get better. Before the semester begins, the sale of textbooks and distribution of supplementary textbooks for intensive students were conducted in the lobby on the first floor of the Ewha Language Center. Also, Ewha Langugae Center shipped textbooks and auxiliary textbooks to students who are not released from self-isolation. Overseas(Online) Intensive Program for students taking classes abroad has began on the same day with domestic program.

Hosting “Meeting with seniors” and “Online Culture Activity” for the 23rd Invited Scholarship Students

On November 27th(Fri), there was an online meeting with scholarship seniors for the 23rd Overseas Koreans Foundation invited students who are taking Korean language program in the Fall and Winter semester of 2020. Those seniors were the 21st Scholarship Students with Bachelor's and Master's Degree at Hanyang and Kyung Hee University (Lim Ilona from Kazakhstan, Lee Alena from Kazakhstan). Students were able to communicate online and share vivid stories about studying abroad in Korea. Furthermore, the 23rd Invited Scholarship Students enjoyed online culture activity as well. The activity was consisted of a tour of Seoul’s landmarks(ex. Changgyeonggung Palace) and a performance of traditional music. It was a time for both scholarship students who stayed in and out of Korea to experience Korea culture even though it had to be conducted online due to COVID-19. In addition, there was an orientation for the winter semester on December 7th(Mon) with the manager of scholarship students from the Overseas Koreans Foundation. The Korean language program provides Korean language course for 28 Korean students for about six months from September 2020 to February 2021. They are selected from 10 countries and invited by the Overseas Koreans Foundation. Since Ewha Language Center was chosen as the consignment program started from the 19th project in 2016, it has sent invited scholarship students from the Overseas Koreans Foundation to prestigious (graduate) universities in Korea every year.

We Cooked Korean Food at Culture Classes!

Face-to-face classes of 2020 Fall Korean Intensive Program began on October 19, Monday and all of the students from Level 1 to 6 took face-to-face Culture Classes in a consecutive order. Culture Class for this semester was an activity to learn how to cook Korean food at a cooking class. Following ‘Social Distancing Rules for COVID-19,’ the number of participating students were limited to under 30 and these small-size classes were offered for eight times, beginning from October 30, Friday. Students learned how to make Japchae and Seafood & Leek Pancake with expert instructors and had opportunities to experience Korean culture having a pleasant time with classmates.
