The fall 2023 semester for the Korean Language Education Department at the Ewha Language Center has commenced. Both the Intensive Course and the September Short-term Course commenced on Wednesday, September 6, while the special Korean language course, the Test of Proficiency in Korean (TOPIK) preparation class, is scheduled to begin on Wednesday, September 13. Additionally, this semester will feature the Commissioned Korean Language Program by the Daehan Korean Language Centre in Singapore. Each class held an opening ceremony for the fall intensive course, coupled with an orientation and campus tour for new students. Furthermore, this semester’s agenda includes after-school cultural activities, such as visits to Lotte World, the decoration of Dancheong pattern mirrors, and kimchi-making sessions. Students will also partake in various cultural activities, including dance and traveling clubs.

The completion ceremony for the August 2023 short-term course took place at 5 p.m. on Thursday, August 24. The ceremony encompassed various elements, including viewing of a video summarizing the students' three weeks of activities, the presentation of honor certificates and completion certificates, congratulatory remarks on the students’ successful completion, and an opportunity for them to share reflections on the program. During the August short-term course, students participated in diverse activities such as the ‘Making Calligraphy Pouch’ at the Eorayeon Seal Experience Center, crafting a ‘Hanji Mobile Phone Holder’ at Hanji Memories, and participating in a ‘Learning Janggu’ session at the National Gugak Center. Additionally, each class had the opportunity to attend a session on ‘Learning Korean through K-pop and K-drama’, while students from grades 1 to 3 also enjoyed the ‘Painters’ performance at Kyunghyang Artville. The students had a fun and meaningful time learning Korean and experiencing Korean culture. The Ewha Womans University Language Center's short-term course is a three-week Korean Language and culture program primarily attended by students seeking an intensive learning experience during vacations or holidays.

On July 4, 2023 (Tuesday), the Ewha Language Center at Ewha Womans University organized an after-school cultural activity named ‘MBC Tour’ for students in the Summer Semester Intensive Course. Students had the opportunity to explore the broadcast set, recording room, editing room, and radio studio of MBC, South Korea's premier broadcasting station, receiving comprehensive explanation about the broadcasting process. Moreover, students were spontaneously invited to participate in the opening of the program “Now is the Radio Era of Jeong Seon-hee, Moon Cheon-sik”. Notably, Chen Yi Yun, a 6th grade student, fluently conversed in Korean with the deejays and introduced the first song. Students who participated in the cultural activities had a great time observing and experiencing the program production process firsthand.

Ewha Language Center at Ewha Womans University organized a ‘Korean Music Concert’ as part of the 2023 Summer Semester Korean culture class on Friday, June 30th. Students enrolled in the intensive course commenced the event by immersing themselves in ‘Yangcheong Doduri’, acquainting themselves with the names and sounds of traditional Korean musical instruments such as gayageum, geomungo, daegeum, pipe, haegeum, ajaeng, and janggu. They also enjoyed renditions of folk songs such as Yukjabaegi, Nyilliriya, and boat songs, and Samulnori. Guided by a vocalist, students learned the rhythm of ‘Milyang Arirang’. The performers concluded the concert with a drum performance, a form familiar to foreign students through the ‘Nanta’ show. Students had time to experience the rhythm of Korean music while learning folk songs. The ‘Korean Music Concert’ took place at Ewha Womans University’s ‘Kim Young-ui Concert Hall’. The intensive course at the Ewha Language Center provides diverse and interesting Korean cultural experiences every semester.

The Scholarship Award Ceremony for the Summer 2023 Intensive Course was held on Thursday, June 15. Eight students were selected as scholarship recipients, each being the top achiever in their respective classes. At the scholarship certificate award ceremony, Director Eun-ju Lee, Vice Director Geum-sook Lee, and teachers from the Korean Language Education Department attended and congratulated the scholarship recipients. The ceremony consisted of congratulatory remarks by Ms. Lee, the awarding of scholarship certificates, the presentation by the scholarship students sharing their impressions, and the capture of memorable moments through commemorative photos. In particular, the scholarship students' presentation of their impressions of taking the course not only showcased their refined Korean language proficiency cultivated over the years, but also the content of their impressions was touching. As recognition for their outstanding Korean language skills, scholarship students will be granted a 50% tuition waiver for the intensive course. Ewha Womans University Language Center consistently awards scholarships upon deserving students every semester in acknowledgment of their academic excellence.
